PATIENTS SPEAK UP ABOUT KIDNEY DISEASE
COMMUNITY HEALTH CAMPAIGN "LIVE YOUR WAY" LAUNCHES ACROSS SINGAPORE
- Life with kidney disease the focus of new public health campaign
- Baxter Healthcare and National Kidney Foundation partner for patients
SINGAPORE, Sept. 28, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- Baxter International, a global medtech leader, has launched an important community health campaign to raise awareness of kidney disease and the treatment options for patients.
The campaign titled "Live Your Way" is one of the largest kidney care public awareness in Singapore and supports a patient-centric event from National Kidney Foundation (NKF) called "My Dialysis Journey".
The event on this Saturday 30 September 2023 offers members of the public free access to registered Healthcare Professionals (HCPs) to ask questions and learn more about Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and the various treatment options for kidney failure including dialysis at home or in a dialysis centre.
Patients on dialysis and kidney transplant will also share their personal stories with the community at the "My Dialysis Journey" event and on television, radio, print and on public signage.
The "Live Your Way" public awareness campaign invites patients and their caregivers, to plan and choose their treatment to help give them the freedom to live a fulfilling life.
Subhan, aged 54, a diabetes patient on home-based peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a chef and cooking instructor who said choosing home-based PD treatment allowed him to continue with his daily activities.
"I can cook, conduct my classes," he said. "I deliver food to my customers during the weekend. Chronic Kidney Diseases isn't a full stop. Planning your treatment gives you the freedom to live your way."
Every day, about six patients are diagnosed with kidney failure in Singapore, a three-fold increase from two decades ago, according to the National Kidney Foundation (NKF).
More than 300,000 people in Singapore suffer from CKD, the precursor to kidney failure, and this number could be much larger as many remain undiagnosed due to the silent symptoms of CKD in its early stages, according to NKF.
NKF holistically supports more than 5,500 patients and beneficiaries, about 60% of the total dialysis patient population in Singapore, by providing quality home-based and in-centre dialysis treatments and integrated care to meet patients' physical, nutritional, and psychosocial needs.
NKF empowers patients to proactively manage their health, enabling them to lead fulfilling lives and make meaningful contributions to both their families and society.
Mr Tim Oei, Chief Executive Officer of NKF said: "CKD profoundly impacts patients and their families, necessitating comprehensive management. This is where "My Dialysis Journey", a vital part of NKF's "Know Right Start Right" programme, comes into play," he said.
"We recognise that each patient's situation is unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution.
"By offering a platform for CKD patients and their caregivers to directly learn from kidney failure patients and renal healthcare professionals, "My Dialysis Journey" aims to address concerns and facilitate informed decisions on the most suitable treatment plan. Through this, we empower individuals to take control of their condition, allowing them to confidently embrace their chosen treatment plan as we journey alongside them."
Baxter Healthcare is a local manufacturer in Singapore of home-based Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) and major supplier to patients and hospitals in Singapore and the Asia Pacific.
Mr Gary Wong, General Manager for Baxter Kidney Care Singapore said: "As a local Singapore manufacturer of critical Peritoneal Dialysis products for patients on home dialysis, Baxter Kidney Care is proud to partner with NKF to help empower patients to choose the dialysis therapy that best supports their lifestyle," he said.
"There is an increasing focus in Singapore and globally on home dialysis as a preferred option to empower patients to manage their dialysis therapy in their own home and live a fulfilling life.
"Home dialysis supported by new digital technology such as Sharesource remote patient management for Peritoneal Dialysis also helps improve clinical outcomes by providing timely treatment data as well as reducing the healthcare manpower burden on our hospital system."
The "Live your way" campaign will run until October 2023.
